History of Aundha – Shree Aundha Nagnath Temple
Aundha Nagnath temple in Maharashtra, dedicated to Mahadev is an ancient temple dating back to the Mahabharata era. The first temple here was built by Yuddhistira, when the Pandavas were in exile. This temple is considered a Nageshwar Jyotirling. The present temple dates back to the 13th century and is said to have been built by the Seuna Yadava dynasty. The temple is believed to have been a seven storied structure before it was looted and destroyed by Aurangzeb.
The present temple is an architectural splendour with beautiful carvings and design. The temple campus is large, covering over 60000 square feet, while the temple itself is 7200 square feet with a height of almost 19 metres. The temple has been renovated by the Peshwas in later periods. The sanctum of the temple is below ground level and is accessed by two steps in a narrow area.
A unique feature of this temple is that Nandi, Lord Shiva’s beloved bull is at the back of the temple. It is said Bhagat Namdev was singing bhajans in the front of the temple and was ordered to leave by the priests. Namdev went to the back and started singing bhajans from there. The idol of the Lord revolved to face Namdev. Besides Nandi, even the temple kund which is normally in front is at the back here.
