History of Dakor Ranchhodraiji Temple

Shri Ranchhodraiji Temple in Dakor, Gujarat is a popular Lord Krishna Temple. The temple is on the banks of the Gomti River. Here the Lord is in the form of Ranchhodraiji. Dakor was earlier a Shaivite site but later developed into a Vaishnavite destination.  The name Dakor comes from Rishi Danknath who lived here in the Mahabharata times. Lord Shiva was so pleased with Rishi Danknath’s penance that He agreed to stay in his ashram in the form of a Shivling.  This temple is now famous as Danknath Mahadev.

The temple was on a raised plinth in the year 1772. The original Ranchhodraiji Temple was quite smaller. The rulers of that time supported the temple with grants given for maintenance and Puja. Those rulers were the Peshwas of Pune and Gaekwads of Baroda. The temple itself is a magnificent structure with 24 towers and 8 domes. The highest tower rises to 90 feet. The main idol of Ranchhodraiji, made of black stone,  is about 1 meter tall. Adorned with the jewelry and fine clothes, the Lord looks breathtaking and full of light. The throne is a masterpiece of wood carving. plated with silver and gold. The Gaekwads of Baroda gifted this to the temple.
The craved gates of the temple are beautiful. Craved with deities like Ganesha, Suryadev, and Chandradev. The unique feature of this temple is an open balcony atop the gate. This is a music room where shehnai and drums are played every three hours. Lord Krishna’s magic never fails to work on devotees.
