History and the story of Srila Prabhupada Pushpa Samadhi Mandir

Srila Prabhupada Pushpa Samadhi Mandir in Mayapur is a tribute to an iconic servant of God. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, also known as Srila Prabhupada was one of the foremost Gurus of the Bhakti Movement founded by  Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the 16th century CE. Mahaprabhu of the Gaudiya Vaishnav sect is believed to be an Avatar of Lord Krishna. All the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are based on the Bhagavad Gita. ISKCON traces its lineage to the Brahma Gaudiya Madhava Sampradaya founded by the great saint Madhavacharya who lived from 1239 to 1319 CE.

Srila Prabhupada was born in 1896 as Abhay Charan De.. In 1922 he met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a prominent religious leader and was influenced by him. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta asked Abhay Charan to spread the message of Lord Krishna to the English speaking world.  In 1933 Abhay Charan became his disciple and committed his life to the service of God. He spent 32 years preparing for his journey to the US and Europe. Abhay Charan was now known as His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami or simply – Srila Prabhupada. In 1965 he went to the United States. He was 69 years old. In 1966 he founded ISKCON and officially registered it in the state of New York. His spiritual message found acceptance with thousands of young men and women. Within a short time he had thousands of followers from all walks of life in the U.S. He spent the next ten years travelling all over the globe and returned to India several times during his travels. ISKCON was now an international organisation with centers and communities all over the world. During this period Srila Prabhupada also established numerous temples in India including Mayapur. He also wrote over 70 books, which are his legacy to the world.

Srila Prabhupada Pushpa Samadhi in Mayapur is a magnificent tribute to the great spiritual leader. The garland that was on Srila Prabhupada when he was laid to Samadhi has been kept here. A large brass statue of Srila Prabhupada has been enshrined here.  A three dimensional display depicts Srila’s life and struggle. The walls outside display scenes from the Bhagavad Gita and Lord Krishna’s life. The Mayapur complex also houses the Chandrodaya temple and Sri Radha Madhab temple. Bhajan Kutir is the place where Srila Prabhupada first lived on the Mayapur campus. 24 hours Harinam Kirtan has been going on in this Kutir non stop since 1990. Several festivals are celebrated here including Janmashtami, Guru Purnima, Diwali and Radhashtami.
