History of Sri Rama Lingeshwara Swamy Temple in Keesaragutta

Telangana's Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple is a very old and significant temple. Another name for it is Kesaragiri Kshetram. The temple is situated in the Medchal–Malkajgiri district in Keesaragutta. The distance from Hyderabad, the Telangana capital, is around 35 kilometres. It is thought that the temple has existed since Trethayuga's reign. It is said that after destroying Ravana, Lord Sri Ramachandra came here. Here, he wanted to erect 101 Shivalingams. He requested that Sri Hanuman bring 101 Shivalingams from Varanasi for this purpose. It was the fortunate time (muhurtam) that came before Hanuman could return. Then Sri Ramachandra was confronted by Lord Shiva. At that point, he offered him a self-manifested Shivalingam to be installed. Hanuman returned from Varanasi shortly afterward with the 101 Shivalingams. The Shivalingam was already in place, which upset him. Hanuman dispersed the 101 Shivalingams throughout the hill in a fit of rage. This location became known as Keesaragutta throughout time. The temple's Shivalingam is regarded as Swayambhu, or self-manifested. Thus, Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy Devasthanam is the name of the temple.

Importance of Sri Rama Lingeshwara Swamy Temple Keesaragutta

Around the Keesaragutta temple, archaeological excavations were conducted. On the hill's northern slope, Shiva Lingas and a number of brick buildings were found. These objects date back to the Vishnukundin Empire. Additionally, a prayer hall, a Yagashala, and fortified walls were discovered during excavations. On the hillsides, there were a few cisterns carved out of rock. These demonstrate how Buddhism and Jainism formerly blossomed here. Twelve Jain Tirthankara statues were found close to the temple stairs on October 18, 2014. They were discovered at a depth of only one foot. These idols were created between the fourth and fifth centuries. This demonstrates that at Keesaragutta, Jainism and Hinduism coexisted.
