About Shree Chintaman Ganesh Temple - Sehore

Shri Chintaman Ganesh Temple is one of the major religious places of Sehore, Madhya Pradesh. This temple is famous all over the country and is also known as 'Chintaman Siddha Ganesh Temple'. A self-manifested idol of Lord Ganesha is installed here, which is half buried in the ground. This temple is about 2000 years old and is believed to be from the Vikramaditya period. It is said that Emperor Vikramaditya was a worshipper of Lord Ganesha and he often used to visit Lord Ganesha in Rajasthan. Once he prayed to Lord Ganesha to be installed in his palace. Lord Ganesha was pleased with the king and agreed to walk with him in the form of a lotus flower. While returning from Rajasthan, suddenly the wheel of the chariot got stuck in the ground at a place near Sehore. Even after a lot of efforts, the wheel of the chariot could not come out and in the morning the lotus flower bloomed and turned into the idol of Ganesha. The king tried to remove the installed idol but it started sinking into the ground. Later, understanding it to be the will of God, King Vikramaditya built a temple in Sehore and installed the idol. The idol of Lord Ganesha is still half buried in the ground. There is a special tradition in the temple where devotees make an inverted Swastika on the wall for their wish. On the fulfillment of the wish, they express their gratitude to Lord Ganesha by making a straight Swastika. This tradition has been going on since 60 years ago, during the plague epidemic, people made a wish here and the disease was cured. Since then, this tradition of Bhandara has been going on every month on Ganesh Chaturthi.
