Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple Hyderabad

About Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple Hyderabad

The temple is believed to be 900–1,000 years old, dating back to the early Kakatiya period, potentially even earlier during the Chalukya era. It sits in a rock-cut cave partway up the ~360 steps to the fort’s summit, beside Ibrahim’s mosque and the king’s palace. This temple is traditionally where the Bonalu festival begins in Hyderabad, followed by celebrations in Secunderabad and across Telangana. Bonalu offerings include ‘bonam’ (rice with jaggery in decorated pots), turmeric/saffron markings on steps, vibrant thottelu, and men as Potharaju leading processions.
