Lord Vishnu’s 1000 names are unparalleled. These names are the bestower of God’s eternal abode (Param Dham). Each name’s or each word’s meaning is delightful and astonishing. Among many commentators, Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya Maharaj has explained the meanings of the names. This is widely and well known.

In a world of practical self interest with the commerce of relationships and where death is inevitable, the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu are the sole support and means to destroy all worldly grief.

Where is it written?

The descriptions of The Soul of all Souls Lord Shri Vishnu’s 1000 names are given in the Anushashik Parva of the Mahabharata by Rishi Ved Vyas Maharaj. The 1000 names have also been talked about by Param Pujya Bhishma Pitama in reply to questions asked by Maharaj Yuddhishtir.


These 1000 names of the Soul of all Souls Shri Mahavishnu gives freedom from disease, independence from fear, turns intolerance to joyfulness, freedom from deathlike grief, with unshakeable faith it gives the gift of the highest knowledge to practising Brahmans, victory to Kshatriya upasaks, wealth to merchants and virtue to those who serve.

When can it be done?

The Yajan of Lord Shri Vishnu’s 1000 names can be done everyday. It can also be done along with Satyanarayan Katha, with Bhagwat Katha, on Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Lord’s Jayanti, or on individual birthdays for benefits, it should be done in full.
How is the puja done?

It can be done by any interested person provided he has learnt the correct way to pronounce the names from a Brahmin. A Brahmin can also be called to do the puja. A Brahmin can also be called by phone and asked to do it on any festival day, birthday, anniversary or social event.


The time taken for this puja is 1 to 2 hours.

Mogra or other flowers (Mogra/ Anya phool)
Basil Leaves – 1000 ( Tulsi Patta 1000)
Incense stick (Agarbatti) (अगरबती)
Dhoop Agarbatti
Lamp (Diya)
Mishri or any other Naivedhya

How many Brahmins are required?

A minimum of one and maximum of 11 Brahmins are required for this puja.

Place of Puja

This puja can be done at the house of the host, any religious place or at the Brahmin’s house as per instructions of the host.
