Temples in Badami

The Bhutanatha group of temples are Hindu temples from the 7th to the 12th centuries located in Badami, Karnataka. It is composed of two subgroups: the North Bhutanatha group, also known as the Mallikarjuna group, dates from the 11th to the 12th century and is primarily composed of Nagara architecture; the East Bhutanatha group, also known as the Bhutanatha main group, dates from the 7th to the 8th century and consists mainly of Dravida architecture. A three day festival known as the Hampi Festival or Vijaya Festival is an important festival for this temple. Visit from October to February, it is the best time to visit Bhutanatha Temple.

Upper Shri Shivalaya Situated on top of the northern hill of Badami, this is the Vaishnava temple. The artwork in these temples displays images of Shiva, Vishnu and Devi, along with stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Between the sixth and eighth centuries, the Badami Chalukyas, also known as the Eastern Chalukyas, constructed these. Ganesh Chathurthi is an important festival at this temple. The best time to visit this temple is during the months of October through February.

The Yellamma temple at Badami is an example of one of the earliest examples of Western Chalukya architecture. Situated at the western end of the tank, this structure is remarkable for its tower, whose layered and twisted roof creates a shape that lies halfway between the South Asian flat pyramid and the North Indian shikhara. Yellamma Jatra is an important festival at this temple. The best time to visit this temple is from October to April.

The Badami cave temples are located in Badami, Karnataka. There is a collection of Hindu and Jain cave temples. Important examples of Indian rock-cut architecture can be found in the caves. The Chalukya dynasty's capital, Badami, was also known by the names Vatapi, Vatapipura, Vatapinagari and Agastya Tirtha in historical records.
