At first, Sankalp is taken in the name of the devotees. Then three Pindas are offered to the three generations of ancestors along with other things such as jaggery, ghee etc. The Pindas are placed on a Vishnu Pad or a Kusha grass mat. Then mantras are chanted and a water offering is done to the ancestors.
