The word 'Navgrah' is derived from Sanskrit. 'Nav' means nine and 'Grah' means planet. The nine planets Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, and Rahu are the nine planetary deities that affect human life. Navgrah affects a person's life positively or negatively. The havan is performed according to the person's birth horoscope and involves nine steps, each with separate aahuti and mantra for a planet.

Kaal means time, and Sarpa means snake. When all the seven planets come between Rahu and Ketu, kaal sarp dosh occurs in person's birth chart. These two grah "Rahu" and "Ketu" are represent the "Snake head" and "Tail". It is beleived that Kaal sarp dosh can bring various problems like financial, health issue and hurdles in career.
