The word Asthi Visarjan is made up of two Sanskrit words: "Asthi" means ashes, and "Visrjan" means immersion. It is believed that performing Asthi Visrjan is mandatory. At first, Sankalp is taken in the name of the devotees. Then puja is done of the ashes of the deceased person, following all the proper Vedic rituals, mantras are chanted by the pujari while doing the puja. Then the pouring of the ashes in the water is done by the devotees with the help of the pujari and the ritual is completed by taking the blessings.
