About Arulmigu Kallazhagar Sundararaja Perumal Temple

Alagar Kovil Temple, also known as Kallalagar Temple, is a major Vishnu temple located in Alagar Kovil village in Madurai district of the state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is built in the Dravidian style of South Indian architecture and is one of the 108 Divya Desams. Lord Kallalagar (Sundararaja Perumal) and his wife Goddess Thirumagal (Lakshmi) are worshipped here. The Kallalagar Temple has immense historical and religious significance. According to legend, Maharishi Sutapas prayed to Lord Kallalagar to be freed from the curse of Maharishi Durvasa. Lord Kallalagar traveled from Alagar Hill to Madurai and freed Maharishi Sutapas from his curse. Since then it became a tradition that every year Lord Kallalagar comes to Madurai and takes a bath in the Vaigai River. The temple complex is spread over about 2 acres and is protected by enclosing it with massive granite walls. The idol of Lord Sundararaja Perumal is situated in the main sanctum in a standing position. There are also idols of Sridevi and Bhudevi. The temple has a seven-storey rajagopuram (gate tower), which adds to the grandeur of the temple. Several major festivals are celebrated at the Kallalagar Temple Chithirai Tiruvila This festival is celebrated in April-May, which marks the visit of Lord Kallalagar to Madurai and the ritual of bathing in the Vaigai River. Aadi Brahmotsavam is celebrated in July-August. These festivals involve special poojas, Rath Yatras and cultural programmes. It is believed that Kallalagar appeared to free Sage Suthapava from the curse he had received from Sage Durvasa. The temple follows the Tenkalai tradition of worship. Six daily rituals and several annual festivals are held at the temple, of which the float festival during the Tamil month of Masi (February-March), Navaratri during September-October and Vaikuntha Ekadasi during Margali (December-January) are the most prominent.
