About Arulmigu Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple
The Arulmigu Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple is a highly revered Hindu shrine located in the ancient town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India, in an area spiritually known as Vishnu Kanchi. This holy temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Varadaraja Perumal (the King who grants boons), along with his divine consort, Goddess Perundevi Thayar. Originally built by the Chola dynasty in 1053 CE and later expanded by the Vijayanagara kings, the temple carries a rich history rooted in the sacred legend of Lord Brahma, who performed a grand ritual here that caused Lord Vishnu to manifest from the sacrificial fire. As one of the 108 sacred Divya Desams, this structural marvel is globally famous for celebrating the annual 10-day Vaikasi Brahmotsavam festival (featuring the grand Garuda Sevai procession), the holy Vaikunta Ekadashi, and the incredibly rare Athi Varadar Utsavam, an extraordinary event occurring only once every 40 years when the original wooden deity is raised from the temple tank for public darshan.
