Tarakeshwar Temple, also known as Baba Tarakeshwar or Taraknath Temple, is a famous Shiva temple located in Hooghly district of West Bengal. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and worshiped as Taraknath, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. The history and architecture of the temple is associated with the spread of Shaivism in Bengal and is considered an important religious and cultural center. Tarakeshwar Temple is a major Hindu Shiva temple located in the town of Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district of West Bengal. The temple is dedicated to 'Baba Taraknath', the fierce form of Lord Shiva and was built by Raja Bharmalla in 1729. The temple is built in Bengal style Achala architecture, with a 'natmandir' (prayer place) all around and a wide courtyard. The legend of the establishment of Tarakeshwar Temple is associated with a devotee Vishnu Das. Later his brother found a Shivalinga there and in a dream Lord Shiva ordered him to build a temple there. After this, Raja Bharmalla built this temple in 1729. The architecture of Tarakeshwar Temple is based on the Bengal style Achala structure, with a Natmandir and a wide courtyard. A holy reservoir called Dudhpukar is located near the temple, bathing in which fulfils the wishes of the devotees. Major festivals in Tarakeshwar Temple include Mahashivratri, Mondays of Shravan month and Gajan Utsav. On the occasion of Mahashivratri, the temple remains open all night and a huge crowd of devotees throngs.
