About Ettumanoor Shri Mahadeva Temple
The Ettumanoor Shri Mahadeva Temple is a legendary Hindu shrine located in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his powerful yet benevolent form. According to local history and mythology, the temple's idol was consecrated by the mythical sage Khara and it is widely believed that the great philosopher Adi Shankara composed his famous Soundarya Lahari while staying at this sacred site. Architecturally, the temple is renowned for its centuries-old wooden carvings, vibrant Dravidian mural paintings and a massive, continuously burning bronze oil lamp (Valia Vilakku) at the entrance. The most famous festival celebrated here is the grand 10-day Ettumanoor Utsavam, held annually during February or March (the Malayalam month of Kumbham), where millions of devotees gather to witness the rare public display of the Ezharaponnana—eight stunning, solid-gold elephant statues gifted to the deity by the historical King of Travancore.
