Samaleswari Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in Sambalpur, Odisha, dedicated to Goddess Samaleswari. Samaleswari Temple is a major Hindu religious place located in Sambalpur city of western Odisha. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Samaleswari, who is considered the main deity of this region. This temple is located on the banks of the Mahanadi River and is widely revered in western Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Samaleswari Temple was built in the 16th century by King Balaram Dev of the Chauhan dynasty of Samalpur. According to legends, one day King Balaram Dev went hunting on the banks of the Mahanadi River, where he saw that he was hunted by a rabbit instead of dogs. This incident was miraculous for him. At night he had a dream of Goddess Samaleswari, in which the Goddess ordered him to install her idol under a cotton tree located on the banks of the river. The next day the king chose the same place and started the construction of the temple by installing the idol of the goddess there.
