About Sangameshwar Mandir

Sangameshwar Temple Saswad is a historical temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located at the confluence of Karha and Chambali (Bhogvati) rivers in Saswad. A great example of ancient architecture can be seen in the temple. Sangameshwar Mahadev Temple was built in the 18th century during the reign of Ambaji Pant Purandare. This temple is an excellent example of Maratha architecture, in which the influence of Yaduvanshi style is seen. The sanctum sanctorum, mandap and shikhara (dome) of the temple are made of marble and black stone. Ganesh Pati is at the entrance of the temple and beautiful carvings are done on the walls inside. The Rangmandap has pillars at all four corners and a grand statue of Nandi is installed in the middle. According to local beliefs, the Saraswati river worshiped Mahadev at this place to escape the curse of Maharishi Vashistha. Since then the tradition of worship started here. There is also an interesting belief that every year in the month of Sawan, a pair of snakes comes to the temple to visit Mahadev. The couple goes back after some time by wrapping around the Shivling, and during this time a crowd of devotees is seen. This event has been happening continuously for the last many years. Mahashivratri: Celebrated in the last week of February or early March, in which special worship and rituals of Mahadev are performed.
