About Shevaroyan Temple
The historic Shevaroyan Temple is an ancient cave shrine located at the highest point of the Shevaroy Hills in Yercaud, Tamil Nadu, sitting at an impressive altitude of 5,326 feet. Dedicated to the local hill deity Lord Shevaroyan and Goddess Kaveri—the guardian deity of the surrounding 67 tribal villages—this natural, narrow cave temple holds profound spiritual and historical significance. Local tribal legends state that the deep, airtight cave extends 480 kilometres underground all the way to the Kaveri River, while historical folklore suggests it once served as a secret hiding spot for Tipu Sultan during regional wars. Today, this iconic Yercaud tourist attraction remains a vital cultural hub, most famous for its vibrant Annual Tribal Festival celebrated every May, which draws thousands of devotees who gather to offer traditional prayers, music, and dances amidst the misty, panoramic backdrop of the Eastern Ghats.
