Shri Ujjaini Mahakali Devasthanam

About Shri Ujjaini Mahakali Devasthanam

Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Devasthanam in Secunderabad, Telangana, is a revered Shakti temple over 200 years old, built around 1815 by Suriti Appaiah in fulfillment of a vow during a deadly cholera outbreak. Initially established with a wooden idol brought from Ujjain, the current stone image—seated in padmasana with four arms holding a sword, spear, damaru, and vessel of amṛt—is adorned with a protective silver shield (vendi-kavacham), installed in 1964. The temple magnetizes lakhs of devotees during the Bonalu festival and Ashada Jathara in July–August, drawing throngs, especially on Sundays and Mondays. It follows traditional Dravidian architectural style with a gopuram, pillared halls, shrines to Manikyaladevi and other deities, and open courtyards for rituals. Daily, the temple performs Suprabhata seva, archana, abhiṣeka, and homams, with special pujas on Fridays and during Navaratri, offering prasadam like pulihora and chakari pongal. Open from early morning until evening, it stands as a testament to faith, community devotion, and living tradition.
