Sri Dodda Basavanna Temple, also known as Bull Temple, is a famous Hindu temple located in Basavanagudi area of ​​Bengaluru city in the state of Karnataka. This temple is dedicated to Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva and is famous for its huge Nandi statue. This temple was built by King Kempe Gowda in 1537 AD. According to local legend, once upon a time a bull (Nandi) used to harm the peanut crops of the farmers. The farmers chased him away, but he disappeared and appeared there in the form of a statue of Nandi, which kept on growing. The farmers, taking it as a sign from Lord Shiva, sacrificed their first crop and built the temple, which is now celebrated as Kadalekai Parishe. The statue of Nandi located in the temple is about 4.5 meters high and 6.5 meters long. It is a huge monolithic statue of granite, which devotees cover with bennane (ghee). This tradition symbolizes the care and respect of the statue. Kadalekai Parishe This festival is celebrated on the last Monday and Tuesday of the month of Karthika. Farmers offer their first peanut crop to Nandi. This fair is an important occasion for local farmers and devotees. The architecture of the temple is in the Vijayanagara style, with simple and impressive structure. Apart from the huge statue of Nandi in the main temple, a small Ganesha temple is also located. The temple is topped by a vimana (temple spire), which was added in the early 20th century.
