About Sri Srikanteshwara Swamy Temple and Dakshina Kashi Nanjangudu

The Nanjundeshwara Temple is located in Rastrapathi Road, Nanjangud, Karnataka. this temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Nanjundeshwara or Srikanteshwara, goddess paravati who has dedicated shrine to the right of the main deity. legend says the shivling was installed by the sage Gautama. it is also the site where sage parashurama performed penance to cleance himself of sin. the garbhagriha is originally constructed by the ganga dynasty. chola and hoysala dynasties expanded the temple with additional mandapas (halls) and corridors between 11th to 13th century. in 14th to 16th century Vijayanagara Empire added  the shrines for goddess Parvati and lord narayna and built the main tower over the sanctum. in 19th century queen devarajammanni  built the massive 120 foot rajagopuram means the entrance tower in 1845. in the 18th century tipu sultan famously called the deity "Hakim (Doctor) Nanjunda" after the temples holy water allegedly cured his favorite elephants blindness. he gifted the temple a green emerald linga in the gratitude.
