About Swoyambhu Mahachaitya
Swayambhunath Temple, also known as the "Monkey Temple", is an ancient Buddhist stupa located in Kathmandu, Nepal. Swayambhunath Temple is also called the "Monkey Temple" because a lot of monkeys are found here. It is one of the oldest and holiest sites of Buddhism. This temple is associated with Mahayana Buddhism and Vajrayana tradition. People of both Hindu and Buddhist religions worship here. It is located on a hilltop to the west of the Kathmandu Valley and is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal. The history of Swayambhunath is believed to be about 2500 years old. According to a legend, the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake and Lord Manjushri drained this lake by cutting it. He saw a lotus flower at that place which later transformed into Swayambhunath Stupa. The existing structure was built by King Vrishadeva in the 5th century.
