The land was donated in 1944 by oil magnate Spencer Kellogg Jr. to the Vedanta Society of Southern California and initially served as a monastic retreat and convent.The flourishing community and growing attendance of Sunday lectures led to the construction of the temple, designed by celebrated local architect Lutah Maria Riggs—her celebrated masterpiece—integrating elements of South Indian wooden architecture with Japanese and Chinese sensibilities.
