Shri Batuk Bhairav Temple

About Shri Batuk Bhairav Temple

Shri Batuk Bhairav Temple and Shri Adi Bhairav Temple are two famous temples dedicated to Batuk Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva, located in Varanasi. These temples are an important pilgrimage site for Aghoris, Tantrikas and devotees. Batuk Bhairav is the child form of Lord Kaal Bhairav—a form in which Bhairav protected Kashi as a Batuk (child) and killed the demon Andhakasur. The temple is considered extremely sacred for Tantric orders—especially Aghoris—because of the presence of an Akhand Deep (lamp) that has been burning for centuries. Local belief is that the touch of the oil of the lamp brings immense blessings—heals injuries and removes mental obstacles. A dog is worshipped as the Lord's servant in the temple premises—the conch-like noise of the worshipped Diirgha gives a spiritual experience to the devotees. The worship rituals here include Kaal Bhairav Ashtak, Swarna Akarshan Bhairav Mantra-japa, Havan, Deepdaan and Gauseva, which are especially performed for employment, business, job, debt relief and prosperity. Devotees are seen regularly chanting mantras, performing weekly pujas and organizing special events on auspicious occasions.
