About

"Chudakarana" also known as Mundan is a ritual which is done by shaving off the First hair of a child who is 1-3 years old. Mundan is an ancient ritual and is one of 16 purification rituals known as Shodasha Samskara. The shaving off of the hair is considered to be a gesture of purification from the previous yonis and freedom from the past. Mundan is the symbol that the child is beginning his/her new life in this birth, free from the bonds of all the last births.

At first, Sankalp is taken in the name of the devotees. Than mantras are chanted by the pujari. The mother sits with the child in her lap and faces the west. The priest shaves off a part of the child's hair while chanting Mantras. After that, the barber shaves off the rest of the hair. After that, the shaven head is washed with holy water from the Ganga (Gangajaal). Then a paste of turmeric and sandalwood is applied. It is believed that this mixture cools the head and speeds up the healing of any nicks and cuts. The shaved hair is either offered to a deity or to the sacred river Ganga. And then Ganga Snan will be done for the child. At last Bagwant Pujan is performed to seek the blessing.

Benefits of Mundan Sanskar

According to the scriptures, a soul gets a human body after experiencing 84 lakh yonis. It is believed that every yoni has its influence on human birth. The shaving off the hair is considered to be a gesture of purification from the previous yonis and freedom from the past. There are also scientific reasons for Mundan, it is said that vitamin D is absorbed faster and more quickly in the baby’s body when exposed to sunlight without clothes and hair.
