Yamunotri Temple is located in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. According to Hindu mythology, Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River, the sister of Lord Yama. Devotees take a dip in the Yamuna River and offer prayers at the temple and take blessings and consider them as custom and rituals. The Temple is open from May to November and remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.
The temple was built by Sudarshan Shah, the King of the Culture Centre of Tehri, in 1839. The main feature is the shrine of Goddess Yamuna made out of black marble and also the surya kund near the temple is known for its therapeutic properties. Reaching Yamunotri is not very easy. You need to change the modes of transport if you are visiting on public transport, as the area is well connected through the roadways. One can easily and directly reach here by roadways.
By Road
To reach the temple, one must first reach the Gauri Kund, then from there one can take a palkhi trek or have a horse ride to the temple. Even to reach it, one can easily take public transport from the nearby cities.
By Rail
The nearest railway station is Dehradun Railway, which is 175 km from Temple. One can easily get a taxi or hire a bus from the railway station to the temple.
By Air
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, which is 210 km from the temple. You can book a taxi or take public transport, which would take you to the temple easily and comfortably.
Best Time to Visit Yamunotri Temple
The best time to visit this temple is from May to October, when there is less snowfall and the place can be explored easily with the sightseeing.
