The festival marks the birth of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who appeared over 5,000 years ago to establish dharma and annihilate evil. Celebrations at ISKCON Nellore begin early and continue until midnight—the sacred hour of Krishna’s birth. The temple is beautifully decorated with lights and flowers. Highlights include mangala aarti, abhishekam (sacred bath) of Krishna, Jhulan Seva (swinging the Lord), Shringar Darshan (dressing the deity), bhajans, kirtans, Krishna katha (pastimes narration), and midnight maha-aarti. A variety of bhog items are prepared and offered to the Lord, followed by prasadam distribution to all devotees. Thousands gather to witness this divine event. Participating in Krishna Ashtami brings the blessings of Lord Krishna, spiritual joy, protection, and devotion. It is a celebration of divine love, compassion, and eternal truth.
Krishna Ashtami Puja begins with achamanam (purification) and a sankalpam (vow) to worship Lord Krishna with devotion on His divine appearance day. The deity or picture of baby Krishna (Laddu Gopal) is placed on a clean altar, decorated with flowers, lights, and rangoli. The puja starts with lighting a diya and incense, followed by Kalash sthapana and offering of akshat, sandalwood paste, roli, tulsi leaves, and flowers.A panchamrit abhishekam (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar) is performed for the deity, followed by bathing with rose or Ganga water. After wiping and dressing the deity in new clothes and ornaments, devotees offer naivedyam—which may include sweets like butter, laddus, fruits, and kheer.Bhajans, Krishna leela katha, and chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra follow. At midnight, the Janma Mahotsav (birth moment) is celebrated with aarti, conch blowing, and prasadam distribution, symbolizing joy, devotion, and divine grace.
