About
Tarpan Puja is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to offer water, black sesame seeds (til), and prayers to the ancestors (Pitru), deities, and sages. The word "Tarpan" means "to satisfy" or "to offer with devotion." It is believed that performing this puja with sincerity brings peace to the departed souls, expresses gratitude to ancestors and seeks their blessings for the well-being and prosperity of the family.
The puja starts with a purification bath and a prayer to Lord Ganesh. Then devotee, guided by a priest, offers water mixed with black sesame seeds, flowers, and sacred grass (kusha) with chanting of Vedic mantras and remembering their ancestors. The ritual ends with prayers for the peace of the departed souls and blessings for the family's health, happiness and prosperity.
