Ramrajatala Ram Temple

About Ramrajatala Ram Temple

The Ramrajatala Ram Temple is located in the city of Howrah, West Bengal, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ram. There is a tradition of wroshipping Lord Ram for 3 long months and this tradition is followed since last 300 years. It is believed that Ayodhyaram Choudhury, the zamindar of the area claimed that he had a divine vision to worship Lord Rama and he started the Puja near the house of Mr.Soumik Adak Choudhury. However, some villagers who were fond of Saraswati Puja, which was a 300-year-old tradition in the area, objected to the Ram Puja. They argued that Saraswati Puja was more important and enjoyable than Ram Puja. After many debates, they reached a compromise that Ram Puja would be done but with Saraswati placed above Ram & Sita. They also agreed that the first bamboo for the Puja would be cut from Sasthitala and offered to Choudhury Para Shiv Mandir on Saraswati Puja day. The Ram Puja started as a three-day fair but gradually expanded to a fortnight and then a month. It now begins on Ramnavami in Chaitra-Baisakh month and ends on the last Sunday of Shravan month. It is the longest running fair in West Bengal.
