Temples in Rameswaram

Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on Rameswaram Island in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is also one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples of the 12th century. The Temple was expanded by Pandya Dynasty. And its principal shrine's sanctum was renovated by Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan and his successor Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan, monarchs of the Jaffna kingdom. The temple has the longest corridor, it was built by King Muthuramalinga Sethupathiy. This temple is considered a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Smarthas.

The Vibhishan Temple is located at a distance of 16 Km from Rameshwaram. It has the only historical structure to survive the 1964 A.D. cyclone that washed away Dhanushkodi. The temple is surrounded by sea and has the deities of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Hanuman and Vibhishana. The temple have been constructed about 500-1000 Years ago. Also, it is the only temple in the world to be dedicated to Rawan's brother Vibhishan.

Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir is located 2 Km from the famous Sri Ramanathasw Temple in Rameshwaram. It is also known as the Five-Faced Hanuman Temple, Which is a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman with five faces. The five faces are portrayed as an idol of Lord Hanuman in the middle along with the faces of Lord Narasimha, Lord Adi Varaha, Lord Garuda and Lord Hayagriva on the other sides. This temple also has the floating stones that were used in the formation of the Rama Setu, the bridge that connected Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka.

Shri Nambunayaki Amman Temple is located at Dhanushkodi, Rameshwaram Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. The Nambunayaki Amman Temple is one of the notable Hindu temples in the region. Goddess Nambunayaki is the family deity of numerous Maratha Brahmin families residing in the region who generally name their child after Amman. As a fact, the name 'Nambu' is a household name in Rameshwaram and finding people with the word 'Nambu' attached to their name is not a big deal.
