Pitru paksh is a sixteen day period dedicated to departed ancestors. Ninth day of pirtu paksh is known as matru navami on that day people perform shradhh for deceased mother. It is believed that performing shradhh and tarpan on this day brings peace the departed soul of the women. During performing this ritual person offeres Food, Water and other things to ancestors. This ritual is done for the spirits of the ancestors to find peace and moksha.
At first, devotees take a bath in the holy river. Reciting the Gayatri Mantra is the most important part of the ritual. Later our Pandit ji makes us worship Lord Vishnu, worship the name of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Pind daan is done, the Pind is offered Tarpan and finally, the Pind Visarjan is done. At last, devotees share food with crows, cows, ants and dogs and the puja is completed.
