Navgrah Puja is done to remove the negative effects of nine celestial bodies which are referred to as Navgrahas in Vedic Astrology. Nine Celestial bodies including the sun, moon, mars, mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. According to astrology, movement or change in the position of Graha can change a person's life like various doshas.
To perform this puja in Gangasagar, one must perform a hawan/homam, while chanting the Navagraha puja mantra. During the pooja, people light up incense sticks and diyas with complete devotion.
At first, mantras are chanted to invoke all the Navgrah or nine planets. Then Sankalp is taken in the name of the devotee. It is followed by the puja of Lord Ganesh and all the Navgrah. After that aarti is done to receive the blessings of the Navgrah.
